How to Start Motorcycle Maintenance

The exact motorcycle maintenance checklist certified mechanics use. Oil, chain, brakes, tires — what to check every ride, month, and season, with clear intervals.

How to Start Motorcycle Maintenance

  1. Check & Change Engine Oil Warm up your engine, drain old oil, replace the oil filter, and refill with manufacturer-recommended oil. Check your owner's manual for the correct oil type and capacity.
  2. Inspect & Lubricate the Chain Place your bike on a stand, visually inspect the chain for wear or tight spots, clean it with chain cleaner, and apply chain lubricant evenly while rotating the rear wheel.
  3. Check Brake Pads & Fluid Inspect brake pads for minimum thickness, check brake fluid level and color in the reservoir, and top off or replace fluid if it appears dark or is below the minimum line.
  4. Check Tire Pressure & Tread Use a quality tire pressure gauge to check cold tire pressure against the values on your bike's placard. Inspect tread depth and look for cracks, bulges, or embedded objects.
  5. Inspect Coolant & Battery Check coolant level in the overflow reservoir and top off if needed. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion, clean if necessary, and test voltage with a multimeter.
